Max Lubisch at Empire State University as the latter attempted to harness a mysterious cosmic energy he had detected - none other than the Enigma Force. Together with the Enigma Force, these heroes have saved all of existence several times over and rewrote Marvel history itself, and they will presumably continue to do so for decades to come. Over the years, countless seemingly ordinary individuals have employed the Uni-Power, but so have many household Marvel Comics names. Then, when the heroic job is done, the Enigma Force moves on to its next partner somewhere else in the vastness of space (though it has shown a clear preference and fondness for the heroes of Earth).īecoming Captain Universe entails a new costume, a new cosmic perspective, and a variable set of awe-inspiring superpowers depending on what the current situation calls for. Also known as the God of Light, the Enigma Force is a living being as old as the universe itself - best described as a “sentient symbiotic energy field.” Occasionally pitched as “The Hero That Could Be You,” the Enigma Force seeks out the heroic potential lurking within everyone and greatly enhances it through the Uni-Power, lending the nigh-omnipotent powers of Captain Universe to individuals in a position of opportunity to do great good - especially if that great good will protect the universe itself, or the precious life within it. Marvel’s Enigma Force, however, is a lot more than a mantle passed from one individual to another. A better question might be “Who has been Captain Universe?” and such a query would result in a long list that includes Captain Universe Spider-Man, Captain Universe Hulk, and Captain Universe Miles Morales. Marvel Comics readers asking “Who is Captain Universe?” are starting their inquiries into the Enigma Force off on the wrong cosmically powered foot.
